Our forest carbon offset initiatives in Nigeria
Through its Nigerian Forest Carbon Offset Initiative, Geotalon aims to preserve and afforest the country’s high-density forest regions so that they serve as carbon sinks, boost biodiversity and support the water cycle. This matters most in the Niger Delta, where oil and gas exploration and production have led to high greenhouse gas emissions.
We work with private and government stakeholders on afforestation in two regions: the high rainforest areas of the Niger Delta, damaged by oil and gas activity and logging, and the inland game reserves of northern Nigeria, deforested by firewood and charcoal collection. Yankari Game Reserve is the first reserve chosen for the inland programme.
